White walls fade into the background, allowing the sights and scents of Hawaii to seep through (along with baked goodies for this couple’s adorable grandchildren). Granite floors are reminiscent of volcanic landscapes, while modern Eucalyptus art and a Seth Parks sea pod pendant transport you to a world along the coast. With the homeowners’ passion for Kauai, modern architecture, and a penchant for hosting their extended family of 14, we faced an exciting challenge: create a modern space that captured the spirit of Hawaii (without veering into clichés) and a design where practicality and comfort were paramount. Through interior design, the essence of their paradise is brought into their everyday lives, while keeping them close to their beloved family in Southern California. The husband’s passion for collecting exotic palm trees and the wife’s love for midcentury, are able to harmoniously coexist among authentic Hawaiian artifacts (a piece from actor Steve Martin), and mid-century classics (Eames, Noguchi, Knoll, et al.); both serving as anchors with a sense of heritage and understated elegance that gracefully marry Hawaii with modernism. Approachable materials with stain-resistant fabrics and a dining table with an (inherently) erasable ceramic top, are perfect for the children (and adults!) to unleash their encouraged creativity for many artistic endeavors. In this home, every detail was carefully considered to create a space that reflects the homeowners' love for Kauai, their passion for modern design and their desire to welcome their beloved friends and family with open arms.
